En Afrique et en Amérique latine, deux types d'imaginaires du politique sont en présence dans des rapports hétérogènes : d'une part le type de représentation des " forces invisibles ", désignées péjorativement comme " forces occultes ", plutôt associées au mal, d'autre part celui de la visibilité et de la transparence de l'espace public. La thèse de ce livre est que le discours pentecôtiste tire toute sa force de sa capacité à mobiliser ces deux imaginaires en les traduisant l'un dans l'autre et en inventant une nouvelle syntaxe. Mobiliser n'est pas créer, le pentecôtisme n'est pas par lui-même porteur d'un imaginaire politique, il récupère et amalgame les imaginaires disponibles et ses " traductions " relèvent plutôt de mésinterprétations constructives. Les dispositifs rituels qu'il met en scène (témoignages, exorcismes, miracles), en faisant notamment irruption dans l'espace public, constituent autant d'opérations discursives qui dérèglent la syntaxe du dicible, déplacent les limites du possible et du pensable. Etudié dans ce rôle de traduction d'un imaginaire dans l'autre, le pentecôtisme ne peut pas être délimité en fonction de critères théologiques. Dans ce livre, tout un ensemble de mouvements (" de type pentecôtiste ") ne sont pas exclus a priori, même s'ils sont combattus par des pentecôtismes plus " orthodoxes ", comme des manifestations sataniques. On y parle donc de pentecôtismes au pluriel. Le pluriel vise aussi, bien entendu, les différences existant entre les continents et à l'intérieur des continents et même à l'intérieur des pays comme le Brésil. Il marque, enfin, les différences entre les vagues de pentecôtisme. Cet ouvrage fait voyager du Mexique à l'Argentine et du Burkina-Faso à l'Afrique du Sud. D'étranges ressemblances se dégagent. Elles permettent de mieux comprendre cet " univers des sectes " souvent travesti par le sensationnalisme

Nowhere has the relationship between state and church been more volatile in recent decades than in Latin America. Anthony Gill's controversial book not only explains why Catholic leaders in some countries came to oppose dictatorial rule but, equally important, why many did not. Using historical and statistical evidence from twelve countries, Gill for the first time uncovers the causal connection between religious competition and the rise of progressive Catholicism. In places where evangelical Protestantism and "spiritist" sects made inroads among poor Catholics, Church leaders championed the rights of the poor and turned against authoritarian regimes to retain parishioners. Where competition was minimal, bishops maintained good relations with military rulers. Applying economic reasoning to an entirely new setting, Rendering unto Caesar offers a new theory of religious competition that dramatically revises our understanding of church-state relations.
